After years of anticipation, fans of the iconic Friday franchise finally have something big to celebrate. According to Mike Epps, the long-awaited fourth and final installment, Last Friday, is officially moving forward — and it just gained a major creative force.
During a recent interview with radio legend Big Boy on Friday (Nov. 6), Epps dropped a headline-making update: Aaron McGruder, creator of The Boondocks, is now part of the film’s writing team.
“I just was with Ice Cube, DJ Pooh, and Aaron McGruder, sitting in the room writing this movie,” Epps revealed. “We’re writing it right now, and it’s gonna be crazy.”
McGruder’s involvement signals a fresh, bold direction for the franchise. Best known for creating The Boondocks — the groundbreaking comic strip-turned-Adult Swim series celebrated for its sharp social commentary — McGruder brings a unique voice that has long resonated with audiences.
The road to Last Friday has been a long one. Since the original Friday hit theaters in 1995, followed by Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002), fans have been waiting decades for a proper finale. Ice Cube has been vocal about studio delays, revealing that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema previously rejected two completed scripts, leaving the project stuck in limbo.
But things finally changed earlier this year when both studios confirmed the film is officially back in motion.
With McGruder now teaming up with Ice Cube, DJ Pooh, and Mike Epps, the momentum around Last Friday is stronger than ever. And Epps didn’t miss the chance to acknowledge Cube’s impact.
“Shouts out to Ice Cube, the Don Mega,” Epps said. “I always give Ice Cube his props because not only did he walk me into the business, but he walked a lot of young brothers and sisters into the business.”
After years of waiting, it looks like fans may finally be getting the finale they’ve been hoping for.
