Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was escorted out of Chicago’s Wintrust Arena Sunday after a heated courtside confrontation with Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud — but the incident didn’t exactly come out of nowhere.
Freedom has spent recent weeks publicly challenging the WNBA over transgender eligibility, including announcing that he and former NBA player Royce White intend to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft while claiming to identify as women.
The declarations have been widely characterized as a political stunt designed to challenge the league’s rules and make a larger point about transgender women competing in women’s sports.
There’s one important piece of context: there are currently no transgender women playing in the WNBA.
The controversy grew enough that the WNBA recently condemned what it called “bad-faith” efforts to manufacture controversy around transgender participation, saying there is no current transgender eligibility issue facing the league.
Freedom took his protest directly to a WNBA game Sunday.
Sitting courtside for the Sky’s game against the Indiana Fever, the 6-foot-10 former NBA center wore a black T-shirt reading “WOMAN — noun. adult human female.”
Things boiled over late in the third quarter.
After Cloud scored with 1:22 remaining, she turned toward Freedom and confronted him. Freedom responded from his courtside seat and stepped toward the court as the two exchanged words. Players and security quickly moved between them before Freedom was escorted from the arena.
Freedom later claimed he was removed for “supporting women.”
The episode comes amid an increasingly politicized debate surrounding the WNBA and transgender athletes. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has also publicly spoken against transgender women competing in women’s sports, while other WNBA players and coaches have supported transgender inclusion.
Freedom has been one of the most provocative voices in the debate, using his proposed WNBA Draft entry to argue that the league’s eligibility rules could potentially allow biological males who identify as women to compete.
