Laila Edwards becomes first Black woman to score a goal during an Olympic hockey game

Laila Edwards, a 22-year-old hockey player from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, made history by scoring the first goal of her Olympic career and the first ever by a Black woman for Team USA during a matchup against Canada in Milan. The historic moment came in the final eight minutes of the third period, securing a 5-0 victory for her team. Edwards, who was named the first African American woman to join Team USA’s women’s hockey team, expressed her honor and desire to be a role model for others in a recent interview. Team USA remains undefeated in the tournament, with Edwards contributing to scoring plays and accumulating four total points. They will face Italy next in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.
