The November 3rd midterm elections were about more than Democrats and Republicans. They were also about representation, progress, and historic milestones that once seemed unimaginable.
For the first time in American history, multiple elected Black governors will serve at the same time. And one of those victories marks a first not just for a state, but for the entire nation.
BLACK HISTORY IN THE MAKING
GEORGIA — KEISHA LANCE BOTTOMS
Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms made history as the first Black woman ever elected governor in the United States! The Democrat also becomes Georgia’s first Black governor and first woman governor, returning the governor’s mansion to Democratic control for the first time since 1998.
WISCONSIN — DAVID CROWLEY
Democrat David Crowley, Milwaukee County’s executive, made history as Wisconsin’s first Black governor in the state’s 178-year history, defeating Republican Tom Tiffany.
FLORIDA — BYRON DONALDS
Right here in the Sunshine State, Republican Byron Donalds made history as Florida’s first Black governor, defeating Democrat David Jolly. Donalds also becomes the first Black Republican elected governor in American history.
MARYLAND — WES MOORE
Democratic Governor Wes Moore won reelection, continuing his historic leadership in Maryland. With the victories in Georgia, Florida, and Wisconsin, the nation is now preparing to have four elected Black governors serving simultaneously — another American first.
OTHER HISTORIC FIRSTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY
The history-making didn’t stop there!
- New Mexico: Democrat Deb Haaland became the first Native American woman elected governor in U.S. history.
- Texas: Democrat Gina Hinojosa became the state’s first Hispanic governor and the first Democrat elected to the office in more than three decades.
- Michigan: Democrat Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
VOTERS ALSO SEND A MESSAGE TO WASHINGTON
Beyond the historic firsts, Democrats scored major victories nationwide, winning control of both the U.S. House and Senate and capturing several governorships previously held by Republicans.
The results were widely viewed as a rebuke of President Donald Trump and his administration, with concerns about the economy, the cost of living, and the direction of the country playing significant roles in the election.
While voters in different states delivered different outcomes, one thing was clear: Americans made their voices heard.
A NIGHT THAT WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY
Regardless of political affiliation, the 2026 elections marked a significant chapter in American history, particularly for Black representation in government.
From the first Black woman elected governor in America to historic victories in Florida and Wisconsin, barriers were broken and new doors opened for future generations.
History wasn’t just remembered on Election Day 2026. History was MADE!
