Black History Month Turns 100

Black History Month in Central Florida

February 2026 marks the centennial of Black History Month, originally established as “Negro History Week” in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. The theme for 2026, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” highlights the significance of recognizing Black history in public life. The military’s history of Black service members, such as Private First Class James Anderson Jr., underscores the challenges faced and contributions made by Black Americans in the armed forces. Commemorating the Montford Point Marines and Tuskegee Airmen serves as a reminder of the slow progress in recognizing Black military achievements and the importance of accurate institutional memory.
