Two historically Black colleges in West Virginia, Bluefield State University and West Virginia State University, have predominantly white student bodies, despite their HBCU designation. Bluefield State University, which was once 90% white, now has a student body that is 71% white. West Virginia State University, founded as an HBCU, now has a student body that is 67.6% white. The racial transition at these institutions has raised questions about the purpose and identity of HBCUs and the impact of desegregation on Black spaces.
