Pope Francis’s funeral to take place on Saturday, says Vatican

Mourning the pope SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - APRIL 22: People pay their respects in front of a portrait of Pope Francis (C) displayed inside Myeongdong Cathedral on April 22, 2025 in Seoul, South Korea. Pope Francis, the first Latin American and Jesuit pope, died on Easter Monday at the age of 88 at the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta after battling pneumonia and other health issues. His death marks the end of a 12-year papacy characterized by efforts to reform the Church, advocate for the marginalized, and promote inclusivity, and it initiates the traditional process of selecting a new pope. Pope Francis, who passed away at age 88, will have a non-traditional funeral and burial. President Trump and his wife, Melania, will attend the funeral services this weekend. The funeral will take place on Saturday in St. Peter’s Square, with the pope being laid to rest in the Basilica of St. Mary Major instead of the typical burial site for popes. The late pontiff had a strong connection to the Basilica and had discussed funeral preparations in advance. Several high-ranking church officials are potential candidates to become the next pope.
