President Trump is planning new measures to address homelessness and crime in Washington, with potential use of the National Guard causing concern for the city’s mayor. Trump announced a White House news conference to discuss his plans to make the capital “safer and more beautiful.” He emphasized the need for the homeless to move out immediately and for criminals to be put in jail. Federal law enforcement agencies have increased their presence in Washington, with the possibility of extending their stay. Mayor Bowser questioned the effectiveness of using the National Guard and suggested other ways the federal government could help address crime in the city.
