Florida’s “Hometown Heroes” is back

Florida’s “Hometown Heroes” program relaunched Monday, which helps frontline workers purchase their first home. The program provides up to $35,000 in down payment and closing cost assistance to the following frontline workers: Healthcare staff members, K-12 school employees, First responders, Law enforcement, Court and childcare workers, Military members and veterans. Those who are eligible can get a “competitive 30-year fixed mortgage rate plus down payment and closing cost assistance.” The standard 1% origination fee is also waived. To qualify for the program, the property the applicants purchase must be their primary residence in Florida. They also have to move in within 60 days of closing. Applicants must also work full-time at a physical location. Remote or work-from-home employees are not eligible. Hybrid employees can qualify if they are on-site at least three days per week. Borrowers will have to repay the amount when they sell, refinance, transfer the deed, pay off their first mortgage, or move out. The Florida legislature allocated $50 million for the program this year.
