Google has settled a class action lawsuit for $135 million after allegations that Android devices transferred cellular data to Google without user consent. The lawsuit claims Google collected data from carriers since 2017 without user permission, leading to unauthorized control over users’ property. To qualify, an individual must live in the US and have used an Android device to access the internet using a cellular data plan at any point since Nov. 12, 2017. Affected users can add their payment method on the settlement website before the final approval hearing on June 23rd. Google must update terms of service for Google Play and stop collecting data when users disable background data usage. Older Android versions are vulnerable to malware, with only a small percentage of users on the latest OS. Individual payouts are expected to be small (capped at $100), according to The New York Post.
