Reportedly, R. Kelly and his legal team have submitted legal documents requesting that the U.S. Supreme Court overturn his sex convictions. His attorney contends that the Protect Act’s extended statute of limitations does not apply to the allegations against Kelly because the behavior for which he is currently serving time occurred in the 1990s, but the PROTECT Act was not implemented until 2003. His attorneys also claim that Congress specifically didn’t include a clause allowing the law to be applied to alleged conduct committed BEFORE 2003. You’ll recall, Kelly was convicted of six of 13 counts back in 2020 -- three for child pornography and three for inducement counts. He received a 20-year sentence and was ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to his alleged victims. In the next few months, the Supreme Court will determine whether to consider Kelly’s appeal.
