Triple-A expects a record number of Americans to travel for Thanksgiving. Here’s when you do and DON’T want to hit the road.

They’re expecting just under 80 million people to head out this year, up from around 78 million last year.

72 million will drive . . . 5.8 million will fly . . . and 2.3 million with take buses, trains, and other modes of transportation. (I’m traveling by canoe.)

The worst days to leave? It depends on where you’re headed. But in general, the worst times to be on the road are next Tuesday from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. . . . and next Wednesday from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

The worst times to be heading home? Sunday, December 1st between noon and 6:00 P.M. . . . and Monday, December 2nd between 9:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. That Monday is rough, because there’s also regular commuter traffic.

The BEST day to drive is next Thursday. There’s usually not a ton of traffic on Thanksgiving itself.
