A recent report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office revealed that the U.S. Department of Education has ceased critical oversight of companies managing the federal student loan program. The report highlighted that the Office of Federal Student Aid stopped reviewing loan servicers’ records for accuracy and ceased monitoring calls with borrowers for correct information. This lack of oversight could lead to borrowers facing incorrect loan repayment statuses, billing errors, and poor customer service. The reduction in oversight was attributed to staffing capacity issues, prompting concerns about the impact on the 43 million Americans burdened with student debt.
