Salt-N-Pepa are the latest group suing for ownership of their master recordings. Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton are basing their claim on the Copyright Act of 1976, which allows artists to terminate contracts and reclaim their recordings after several decades.
In their lawsuit they are arguing that “UMG has indicated that it will hold Plaintiffs’ rights hostage even if it means tanking the value of Plaintiffs’ music catalogue and depriving their fans of access to their work.”
Their former DJ, Spinderella is not a party to the lawsuit. The ladies are also set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame this year.
