Some people say you have to run your finances like a business. So if that’s the case . . . and money is a little tight . . . maybe before Christmas you should consider “LAYING OFF” A GIFT RECIPIENT

Today, December 11th, is the most popular day of the year to break up with a partner, particularly a boyfriend or a girlfriend. Around 15 years ago, researchers used Facebook statistics to study when people are most likely to change their status from “In a Relationship” to “Single,” and the day with the biggest spike was December 11th. Ever since, it’s been considered “Breakup Day.”

A more recent study from the dating app Flirtini found that 3 in 4 online daters have experienced a breakup during the Christmas season.

Here’s the thinking on why today might be the most common day for breakups:

It’s not TOO close to the holidays for it to be cruel, and it’s far enough away that you could skip buying them a present. Plus, you wouldn’t have to bother with the awkward family-introducing . . . especially for newer relationships.

Also: Conversations around Christmas can make a relationship “feel more serious” than you’re ready for . . . and this time of the year can place increased stress and pressure on not-so-stable relationships. Other popular times for breakups are late March, and the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, which has come to be known as “Red Tuesday.”
